Low Income Taxpayer Clinic

The UGA Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), an IRS grant funded program, may be able to help if you have a dispute with the IRS. The LITC provides free and confidential tax dispute assistance to income-eligible taxpayers in Athens and surrounding counties.

Our Services

  • We assist taxpayers who have received a Notice of Levy or Notice of Filing of Federal Tax Lien.
  • We support taxpayers who are being audited by the IRS Examination function in connection with their individual tax liabilities.
  • We help taxpayers settle tax debts or secure installment agreements.
  • We work very closely with the UGA Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program that may handle the tax return amendment part of the controversy.

How to Best Use the LITC

  • Current income records such as pay stubs, receipts or 1099s
  • All letters, notices, bills or correspondence from the IRS
  • A copy of ALL letters you wrote to the IRS
  • Copy of tax returns in controversy
  • Copies of all tax returns filed in the last 5 years, if possible
  • Any other papers that pertain to your tax dispute
  • Copy of your tax transcripts, if possible

In Addition to Providing Tax Support, the UGA LITC Can

  • Give presentations before community groups
  • Provide promotional and educational materials on taxpayer rights
  • Advise organizations and train staff who work with low income taxpayers
  • Promote family and economic stability
  • Relieve stress of tax debt
  • Build and retain assets
