- When did you graduate? What was your major?
I graduated from the UGA in May 2019 with a degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the College of Education and received a certificate in Disability Studies through the Institute on Human Development and Disability in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
- Are you currently in school or working?
I am currently in Occupational Therapy school at Augusta University.
- How did the certificate program impact you? What did you learn through the certificate?
The certificate program impacted me by giving me a more holistic view on people with disabilities. I took a class on advocacy through this program and learned all about what it takes to advocate for what matters for people with disabilities. I hope to take this knowledge into my career as an OT, to be able to advocate for my patients and give them the best level of care. This certificate program opened my eyes to both the progress that we have made in this country for equal rights for people with disabilities but also made me aware that there is still so much to improve on.
- Can you explain Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy is all about helping people remain or become independent in everyday tasks also known as our daily occupations. This can include anything from handwriting in children or helping people with energy conservation techniques or helping people to continue to do tasks that are meaningful to them.
- What are your goals for the future?
My future goals are to become a practicing and licensed Occupational Therapy. I either want to work at an inpatient rehab facility or a hospital with either adults or children.
- Why do you think students at UGA should take disability classes through IHDD?
I think students at UGA should take disability classes through IHDD because they provide a unique opportunity to become knowledgeable in this area of study. It allows us to be aware of the history of the rights of individuals with disabilities as well as give you the unique opportunity to find your voice and passion for people.
