- When did you graduate? What was your major?
I graduated in December 2018 with a BSFCS in Human Development and Family Science & a Certificate in Disability Studies.
- Are you currently in school or working?
I am currently attending Augusta University to receive my Masters of Health Science in Occupational Therapy. I also work remotely and part-time for IHDD.
- Can you explain Occupational Therapy?
Occupational Therapy (OT) is a client-centered approach that helps individuals of all ages and diagnoses live life to the fullest. The goal of OT is to improve independence and enhance participation in everyday activities. Occupational therapists can assist people to learn or relearn many activities of daily living such as: dressing, grooming, driving, cooking, leisure, and all other activities that people find meaningful.
- How did the certificate program impact you? What did you learn through the certificate?
I learned about so many aspects of disability including: the history of disability rights, how to advocate for people with disabilities, and the concept of disability as a social construct. The classes completely changed my view on disability and has provided me a unique perspective.
- What are your goals for the future?
I hope that as an Occupational Therapy Practitioner, I can improve the lives of others by helping them to increase their independence in activities that are meaningful to them. I would love to be able to consult with IHDD after becoming licensed!
- Why do you think students at UGA should take disability classes through IHDD?
I think all students should take a class though IHDD because they are a great way to gain a new perspective. Whether you are already passionate about disability or not, the IHDD classes teach you about a perspective that either you or someone you know will experience in your life. Also the classes discuss important parts of history that is rarely talked about in traditional history classes.
