We accept qualified candidates who are FACS undergraduate or graduate students in any of our majors or degree programs.
- What if I am not interested in politics?
Successful students come from all FACS degree programs and will be given the opportunity to strengthen skills that are transferable to any field or industry. Visit the benefits by major section of the website.
- When do I apply?
The application is open year-round. The best time to apply is mid-spring to early-fall.
- What do you look for in fellows?
We look for students who are responsible, curious, organized, open to new ideas, take direction well, follow through, and have a willingness to learn.
- How many Legislative Aides are chosen?
The program can accommodate five to seven fellows.
- When is the fellowship?
The programs is a spring semester only experience during the Georgia General Assembly, which is typically early January to sometime in March or April depending on the proceedings of the General Assembly. Fellows work Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm with occasional after hours networking events.
- Where is the fellowship?
In Atlanta at the capitol and associated buildings.
- Where will I live?
Legislative Aides are not required to live in Atlanta during their internship experience; however, some LAs have found it beneficial to do so (i.e. rent apartments, live with relatives) in the past to minimize their commute. Students are responsible for securing their own living arrangements with assistance from the college.
- Do I get course credit?
Yes, you will register for FACS 5910 as an undergraduate or FACS 7910 as a graduate student. You can register for up to 12 hours for both.
- How much is my stipend?
Legislative Aides receive $4,000 in financial support. It is divided into two monthly installments usually occurring late fall and mid-spring.
- What are the course requirements?
Course requirements consist of weekly discussion prompts, weekly logs, a mid-term self evaluation, a final self evaluation, social media promotion, planning support for FACS Day at the Capitol, career consultation, and other needs as identified by the program director and dean.
- Who supervises my fellowship?
This may vary based on who is the Legislative Aide Program Director. At this time the internship is supervised by Dr. Sheri Worthy, program director.
- Can I choose whether I want to work in the House or Senate?
We will take your preference into consideration. Final placement is decided by the Program Director and Dean.
- How do I prepare for this fellowship experience?
There are mandatory pre-departure meetings in November or December before your January start.
